Syrian Refugee Thanks People Of Liverpool
A man who fled his home in Syria's been telling Radio City how people in Liverpool have helped him escape from the dangers of war..
Maen Mkiessen fled from Damascus four months ago. His family are still there
He told us he spent thousands escaping to the Turkish border and then on to the UK, leaving his family behind in the process.
"I want only a safe place. Damascus and Syria is a battlefield. There is no safe place there"
"It was very difficult and expensive to get my family along with me. To leave them there was very difficult. I only want to see my children again"
Maen recieves help from Aslyum Link Merseyside who have supported asylum seekers and refugees for 15 years.
Manager Ewan Roberts said:
"On average we see around 180 people a day but recently it's gone up to up to 200 and we're feeding those people. We're not struggling at the moment but we're maxed out"
"We've seen a change in perception in the recent few weeks, trigged by the photo of the two Syrian boys washed up on the beach and that's brought home the horror to people of the crisis out there"
Liverpool is taking centre stage in the refugee crisis on Saturday 19th September when the With Love from Liverpool Concert gets underway.
It's been organsised by Mayor Joe Anderson and will raise funds for the British Red Cross.
John Bishop is hosting the event, with acts such as the Farm. OMD and Lawson.
