Residents reported hearing a loud bang at around 10.30pm on Sunday in the area of Carisbrooke Road and Arundel Street.
Enquiries have been carried out and evidence of a firearms discharge found at the scene.
Detectives from the force’s Matrix Serious Organised Crime Unit are leading the investigation and believe the shot may have been fired from a silver car in Carisbrooke Road towards a group of people stood by the bollards in Arundel Street.
No-one has come forward so far to report having been injury and no houses in the street have been damaged.
