The annual Southport Air Show returned to Southport Beach this weekend, but there was the noticeable absence of the Red Arrows.

Although the event featured a jam-packed schedule, the scheduled Red Arrows flyover at 12pm on Saturday was cancelled, citing bad weather.

Heavy showers localised to Blackpool would have prevented the planes from landing safely after their appearance in Southport.

Wing Commander, Adam Collins posted to Twitter following the cancellation:

Despite the Red Arrows disappointment, the rest of the weekend still promises all sorts of attractions both from the air and from the ground.

Taking to the skies onlookers can look forward to a Battle of Britain Memorial Flight at 2pm today, displays of a Rolls Royce Harvard and Spitfire Heritage flights at 15:08 and 15:29pm today and a flyover from an RAF Typhoon just before the close of the airshow at 4pm today.

For those closer to land there was a Military Village courtesy of the Armed Forces set up with equipment to view. There is also a Mid Lancs Military Vehicle Trust and a Lytham St Annes Spitfire.

Those interested in talking to various army recruitment groups and joining themselves have the opportunity to speak to RAF and army recruiters.

Parking is available on the beach (North Beach only), Marine Drive and off the promenade in Princes Park, the Esplanade car park, and Victoria Park, only 5-minute’ walk from the seafront.

The Southport Air Show opens at 10:00 and closes at approximately 17:00 on Sunday.
