The process of recruiting the next Chief Constable for Merseyside Police is getting underway today

Merseyside’s Police Commissioner Jane Kennedy is inviting applications from candidates to take responsibility for leading the Force following last week’s announcement that the Chief Constable Sir Jon Murphy is to retire.

The Commissioner is looking for an operationally experienced and successful police chief who can continue the modernisation and reform of the police service and who can work to shape the future of policing on a regional and national level.

Potential candidates will be expected to demonstrate strong leadership skills coupled with integrity, commitment and clear strategic thinking.

The closing date for applications is 5pm on Monday, 15th February, with interviews and assessment taking place on Monday 7th and Tuesday 8th March.

The Police and Crime Panel will then review the PCC’s appointment process and consider her preferred candidate at a confirmation hearing on Thursday March 17th.

Jane Kennedy said: “Now the Chief Constable has announced he will be retiring in June it is my responsibility to start the process of recruiting his replacement.

“I am looking for an outstanding individual who has the energy, drive and skill to lead one of the most dynamic and forward-thinking Forces in the country.

“Merseyside Police has a reputation for leading the way in delivering excellent policing and candidates will need to demonstrate a clear vision for the force and how they will navigate the complex and evolving policing landscape to ensure Merseyside Police remains one of Britain’s top performing forces.

“The new Chief Constable will need to have the influence and gravitas to maintain and strengthen this reputation locally and nationally and be an ambassador for our region.

“Sir Jon was an exemplary Chief Constable and he will certainly be a tough act to follow. I am looking for candidates who have the skills, personal attributes and ability to fill those shoes.”

Applicants must have passed the Senior Police national Assessment Centre and successfully completed the Strategic Command Course. Both UK police officers and holders of senior rank in designated overseas police forces are eligible.

The appointment will be on a five-year fixed term basis and the salary, which is determined by the Secretary of State following consideration by the Police Remuneration Review Body, is £162,024.
