Search continues after unexploded ordnance found in St Helens house
Controlled explosions were carried out, andthe cordon remains in place following further discoveries
Emergency services remain at the scene on Chadwick Road in Haresfinch, St Helens, after the discovery of an unexploded ordnance led to an ongoing search of a residential property.
The incident began on Tuesday, 24th June, when the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team was called to the address following the discovery of a suspected device.
Since then, the search has intensified, and a number of further improvised explosive devices (IEDs) have been recovered from the house and its garden. Controlled explosions have already been carried out.
Due to the risk of further devices being present, a police cordon remains in place and will continue overnight and into tomorrow.
Merseyside Police have confirmed that public safety is the top priority, with agencies working together to manage the situation.
Superintendent Peter Clark said: “We know that a lot of those people and families displaced will be frustrated, but I can reassure them that the cordon will remain in place until we are all satisfied that the house and garden have been fully searched and any potential risks to the public negated.
“Everyone is working expeditiously to finalise the search of the property, but as a result of further IEDs and other items found within the house and the garden we are unable to reduce the cordon this evening.
“Public safety is our key priority and whilst the search is ongoing and because of the discovery of further items today we are not in a position to reduce the cordon. We will issue a further update tomorrow and hopefully by then we will be in a better position to consider reduction of the cordon.”
The operation involves Merseyside Police, Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service, North West Ambulance Service (NWAS), St Helens Council, and the EOD.
They have reiterated their commitment to completing the search as quickly as possible without compromising safety.
Many local residents have left the area, staying with family and friends. For those unable to do so, accommodation, refreshments and support are available at Chain Lane Community Centre, which will remain open until 10pm tonight.
Council officers are on hand to assist residents, particularly those with medical needs. Vulnerable individuals who are unable to reach the centre are advised to contact the Contact Cares helpline on 01744 676767 for assistance.
Authorities are urging any residents who need help or haven’t yet sought support to come forward.
