Police given more powers to stop and search in Liverpool
It's after a triple stabbing left one person seriously injured yesterday
Merseyside Police have been given more stop and search powers in parts of Liverpool City Centre, after a violent altercation left three people injured.
Emergency services where called to Church Street at around 5.30am yesterday morning, following reports a 21 year old man had been stabbed in the chester. He was rushed to hospital, where he is in a critical condition.
Two other people later attended A&E, one with a knife wound to the back and the second with a laceration to the head.
It is believed the injuries are linked to a disturbance involving two groups of males who left the Safe House bar onto Peter Street a short time earlier.
Merseyside Police have now issued a Section 60 order for parts of the city, meaning officers can stop and search people without having reasonable grounds for doing so.
Areas covered includes Leeds Street, King Edward Street, New Quay, George’s Dock Gates, Strand Street, Liver Street, Argyle Street, Lydia Ann Street, Kent Street, Duke Street, Berry Street, Renshaw Street, Lime Street, St Georges Plac, St Johns Lane and Byrom Street.
Community Policing Inspector David Grant said: “Such violence and the use of any weapons in our city is reckless will not be tolerated. Extra officers will be in the area to search any individuals or groups causing such issues, and to provide reassurance to the vast majority of law-abiding people in the community.
"Such action isn’t about bothering anyone going about their daily business or preventing young people from meeting with friends. It’s simply about taking action to reduce violence and make sure that everyone can feel safe where they live."
The order, made under the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994, came in at 3pm on the 27 December, and last until 3pm today (28 December)
