Police appealing for witnesses after hit and run in Runcorn

Officers are appealing for witnesses and dash cam footage following a fail to stop collision in Runcorn.

Shortly before 6pm on Monday 17 October, police were called to reports of a collision on the A533 Southern Expressway, Runcorn.

Officers attended the scene and on arrival they found a silver Mini Cooper which had come off the road and overturned on an embankment.

The driver of the car had fled the scene and a 41-year-old local man was left trapped in the passenger seat.

The man was released by firefighters and taken to Aintree hospital, where he is currently in a critical condition.

A 29-year-old man from Widnes was subsequently arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving; he had since been released under investigation.

Police Constable Liz Thompson, of the Serious and Complex Collision Investigation Unit, said: “This was a serious collision which has left a man with critical injuries.

“As part of our investigation we are keen to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time of the incident and believes they may have witnessed the collision. The same goes for anyone with any CCTV or dashcam footage of the incident.

“We would also like to hear from anyone who witnessed, or anyone with any dashcam footage of the silver Mini Cooper being driven from Widnes Town Centre, towards Runcorn prior to the collision.

“From our enquiries so far, we believe the car drove from Widnes Town Centre at 5.47pm and across the Mersey Gateway bridge towards Runcorn.

“I urge anyone with any information – no matter how small – to get in touch.”
