After years in the making, the first patients are stepping through the doors at Liverpool's new Royal Hospital.

The site was supposed to have opened in 2017, but by then it had already experienced delays, which were further hindered by the collapse of construction giant Carillion in 2018.

The Trust's aiming to have staff, patients and services fully moved into the new hospital by the 21st October, but we're told A+E won't relocate until the last day.

The whole move will take 24 days:

In a statement on social media, the hospital said that it was welcoming outpatients from today:

Our new outpatient department has opened today! Patients will be notified in appointment letters which clinic they should attend.

The hospital is open only for outpatient appointments, 7.30am-6.30pm. Staff and volunteers will be on hand to assist with any queries or wayfinding.

Current inpatients and their families will be told directly when their ward will be moving later this month, and any visiting arrangements. A phased process, patients will be transferred from the old Royal to their new wards via a patient transfer tunnel 🏥

The route has been meticulously planned and trialled to ensure patient safety and continuance of care 💙 __

Please note, A&E will remain at the old Royal until later in the move 🚨 __

Patients should continue to visit the A&E department at the current Royal as usual and do not attend the new hospital. If you require urgent care and not sure where to go, please contact NHS 111. We will share more details on when the A&E will be moving at a later date

Inpatient ward moves will take place through October. Current inpatients and their families will be told directly when their ward will be moving, and any visiting arrangements for patients.

The hospital says that staff will notify patients in advance of which day their ward is moving.

They will be transferred from the old Royal to their new ward via a patient transfer tunnel.
