There are fears school children across Merseyside could lose out on months of schooling if Covid takes hold over the Winter.

Twelve schools here have already had to bring in extra measures since the start of term after seeing a rise in cases.

Figures for the first three weeks of September show almost 700 pupils and staff tested positive in Liverpool alone.

Pete Middleman from the NEU fears it's inevitable with a lack of restrictions :

"Infection rates in the community are higher at this point in 2021 than they were in 2020 and we know that the beginning of October last year saw a very steep rise in infections and that contnued all the way into the new year when the lockdown was eventually announced in January.

"Young people will still spread it and if they contract the virus then they'll need to self isolate and then will miss additional schooling and that's a real concern for us and one we think was emminently avoidable".
