Liverpool's Metro Mayor says the fight to make face masks mandatory on public transport across the City Region is out of his hands.

Yesterday, London Mayor Sadiq Khan announced face coverings must be worn on the capital's transport network, even after coronavirus restrictions are eased on Monday.

But Steve Rotheram can't influence bus and train services owned by private companies here - although you will have to wear a mask if you want to get the ferry.

The Metro Mayor says he'd do it if he could :

"I haven't got the same powers. Instead I'm trying to make wearing face masks mandatory on the bits of the network that I can but in all honesty I'm hitting brick walls.

"I'll be asking all of them, Stagecoach, Arriva, MerseyRail, TPE, Avanti and Northern to do the right thing. I don't think we can put a price on public safety".
