Merseyside LGBT+ footballer fears there'll never be an openly gay Premier League footballer
Chase Newton says players have considered quitting over fears of homophobic abuse
Footballers across Merseyside are calling for more 'pride on the pitch' to help stamp out homophobic abuse in grounds.
It comes after Liverpool condemned chants aimed at Norwich's on-loan Chelsea midfielder Billy Gilmour at the weekend.
We're speaking to Chase Newton who plays for Mersey Marauders, Merseyside's only LGBT+ club, as we continue to spread our message that Liverpool is No Place for Hate
He fears there'll never be an opely gay Premier League footballer if homophobic abuse from the crowd continues :
"If you were to come out as gay and you're a player on a massive team and you miss a penalty or you perform badly then you're going ot be blamed by the fans for that performance for being gay"
"The chanting is going to come so if they feel it'll affect their performance then why are they going to come out?
"There ar epeople on the team who have said they wouldn't play football again because they felt scared to express themselves and basically giving up the sport they love because of the atmosphere".
