Merseyside foodbank warns people crippled by cost of living don't have time to wait for new PM
With no new leader expected before September 5th, there's real concerns that will come too late to deal with huge hike in energy bills this Autumn
As the contest for number ten gathers pace, foodbanks on Merseyside are warning people here crippled by the cost of living crisis don't have time to wait for a new Prime Minister.
With no new leader expected before September 5th, there's real concerns that will come too late to deal with a planned hike in energy bills this Autumn.
That's lead to calls for the focus to be put back on those struggling to pay bills, with some calling for a complete overhaul of the benefit system.
One of those is Richard Roberts from Wirral foodbank, he says people here are facing real crisis every single day :
"Clients are in tears as they don't know where to go to, this is needed now, it cannot wait.
"People are asking 'please don't give me food that you have to cook because we can't afford to.' It's a real decision that Government has to face.
"It is a tsunami that is coming towards us; increasing food costs, increasing fuel costs, eleven percent inflation expected and cost of living, benefits are not keeping up with that at all.
"Regardless of which government is in power there is a real need to look at the benefit system to make it in line with the true cost of living. Individuals cannot maximise their income, they are at that level becuase the benefit system is at that level.
"People are now skipping meals and trying to make that decision to heat or eat".
The Government say from tomorrow more than 8 million households in the UK will receive the first of two instalments, totalling £1200, to support them with the cost of living.
