A Merseyside charity has launched a campaign after revealing a shocking 40% surge in sexual violence referrals after the festive holidays.

Stats from the Rape and Sexual Abuse Support Centre also show an alarming 17% surge in referrals from across Knowsley and St Helens for the year ending March 2023, when compered to the previous year.

January 2023 saw a 40% rise in referrals when compared to the monthly average.

The RASASC is urging people to be vigilant and proactive to help prevent incidents of sexual violence, abuse and rape.

Julie Evans, Operations Director at RASASC, said:

"The holiday season, while a time of joy for many, unfortunately sees a concerning increase in reports of sexual violence in January. We want to equip individuals with practical advice to stay safe and encourage those affected to reach out for support.

“We are also here to support those who may be struggling with the impact of historical sexual abuse who find this time of year triggering for many different reasons, which might include an increase in social gatherings, pressure to participate, childhood memories or anniversaries related to trauma."

The charity can be contacted directly by emailing support@rapecentre.org.uk or by calling 0330 363 0063.
