Headbolt Lane station opens
It also marks Merseyrail's first battery-train entering into service
Merseyrail's brand-new station at Headbolt Lane in Kirkby is opening today (Thursday 5 October).
It will be served by pioneering battery-technology in the city region’s new trains.
The station is the first to be built in Knowsley since Whiston in 1990 and will become the new terminus of the Kirkby branch of the Northern Line of the Merseyrail network, as well as the final stop on the Manchester-Wigan-Kirkby services provided by Northern.
In a first for UK passenger services, battery-powered trains will used to serve the station, which marks a step towards Liverpool City Region Mayor Steve Rotheram’s “Merseyrail for All” ambition to connect more people across the region via an extended rail network.
