Specially designed Freedom of the City scrolls and medals that will be awarded to the families of the Hillsborough 96 and key campaigners are available for public to see in a once in a lifetime opportunity.

The honours are on display in Liverpool Town Hall’s main ballroom today ahead of a special ceremony at St George’s Hall on Thursday.

One hundred scrolls and medals will be awarded on the night – 96 for the Hillsborough families and the same honour for Kenny and Marina Dalglish and Professor Phil Scraton, who was a member of the Hillsborough Independent Panel.

The artwork on the scrolls was created by city council graphic designer Esther Lazenby and features the words “justice” and “truth” as well as images of Liverpool town hall and St George’s Hall.

The families of the 96 were awarded the Freedom of the City in 2009, but their loved ones will now receive the highest civic honour posthumously.

The Right Reverend James Jones, the former Bishop of Liverpool who chaired the Hillsborough Independent Panel, is also set to receive Freedom of the City, but due to his work commitments with the Home Secretary he won’t collect the accolade until early in the new year.

The Freedom of the City scrolls are on display in Liverpool Town Hall until 5pm.
