A man's sufffered a broken leg after his scrambler bike was involved in a collision in Huyton last night.

Officers were called to Hillside Road shortly after 7.15pm, following a report that an orange KTM off-road bike and a blue Ford Focus had been in collision.

Emergency services attended and the 21-year-old rider of the scrambler bike, who was not wearing a helmet, sustained facial injuries and a broken right leg. He was taken to hospital for treatment where his condition is described as stable. No-one else was injured.

Other males reportedly removed the bike from the scene and officers later recovered it from nearby St George’s Road.

House-to-house enquiries have been carried out and CCTV opportunities are also being explored.

Sergeant Martin Mayne, from the Matrix Serious Organised Crime Roads Policing Unit, said: "Our enquiries into this incident are at an early stage but we currently believe the scrambler bike may have been ridden in an anti-social manner prior to the collision.

"I would like to take this opportunity to reassure communities across Merseyside that we understand their concerns about scrambler bikes and will be relentless in our efforts to tackle them.

“The riders of these bikes are jeopardising their own safety and that of innocent road users and pedestrians.

“We will continue to take proactive action to locate and seize suspected stolen or nuisance bikes."

On 9 June, Merseyside Police launched Operation Brookdale, its fifth annual summer operation to crack down on the use of scrambler and quad bikes and off road vehicles in Merseyside. More than 100 off-road bikes have already been recovered as part of this year’s operation.

Sgt Mayne added: "Merseyside Police will not tolerate the illegal, or anti-social use of scrambler, or quad bikes but we need the public to tell us where these bikes are being stored and who is using them so we can take action and take these bikes out of circulation.

“Last year every address the public told us about was visited by officers. If you provide us or Crimestoppers with information about the use of these bikes, I can assure you we will take action."
