A man has today, Thursday 22 August, been jailed for 12 years following a road collision in Norris Green where a 81-year-old man was killed.

On Sunday 25 February at 6.27pm emergency services were called to a report that a man had been struck by a silver Ford Transit van which was travelling along Utting Avenue East and had failed to stop at the scene.

The pedestrian, 81-year-old John Newton, sadly died in hospital the next day (Monday 26 February) from his injuries.

The driver of the silver Ford Transit van, 42-year-old Christopher Daly, drove away from the scene.

Daly, of Walton Village, pleaded not guilty to Causing death by Dangerous driving but following trial has been found guilty and was jailed for 12 years today. He has also been banned from driving for 16 years after he is released from prison.

Detective Inspector Steve Street said: “Our sincere condolences remain very much with John’s family and they have been supported by our specially trained Family Liaison Officer throughout the process.

“I would like to thank those that helped at the scene of the collision incident, and who have helped with our enquiries to identify John which assisted in finding his family before he died.”

“I hope that today’s sentence will go some way for John’s family to begin to try and move forward and properly grieve.” Hear all the latest news from across the UK on the hour, every hour, on Greatest Hits Radio on DAB, smartspeaker, at greatesthitsradio.co.uk, and on the Rayo app.
