A man's been left fighting for his life in hospital, after an attack in Liverpool City Centre on Saturday night ( 23 October).

At around 9.15pm, emergency services were called to Castle Street to reports that a man was unconscious on the floor, after being assaulted by another man.

The victim was taken to hospital where he is being treated for serious head injuries and his condition is currently described as critical.

It is believed that he was trying to intervene in a heated argument between an aggressive man who was threatening a group of men near to the Castle Street Townhouse, when he was assaulted by the lone male, who then walked off towards the courts.

The offender is described as a white male, mid 30s, 5ft 9in tall, with a broad build and short hair. He was wearing a white shirt and jeans and was last seen heading down Castle Street towards the courts.

Merseyside Police have launched an investigation and enquiries are ongoing to trace the offender. Officers are particularly keen to speak to any taxi drivers or motorists who were in the area at the time and may have vital dashcam footage.

Detective Inspector Michelle Wilson, said:

“It is believed that the 30-year-old victim was trying to intervene in an argument to prevent any potential violence and was then assaulted himself.

"We understand that the offender had been in the Castle Street Town House just before this incident and had been ejected from the premises after becoming in involved in an argument with a group of friends.

"Forensic examinations are currently ongoing at the scene and we will be reviewing CCTV from the area, but I would also like to appeal to anyone who was in the area and has any information, or mobile phone/dashcam footage that may be able to assist our investigation to come forward.

"We appeal to anyone who has information to come forward as soon as possible. If you're a driver who was in the Castle Street area at the time of the incident at around 9.15pm please let us know if you have dashcam footage which could help further our investigation."
