Police were called to the junction of Houghton Road and Hoole Road in Upton, just before 6.30pm

A man in his 20s from Birkenhead was driving down Houghton Road and was attacked by a group of six or seven men.

It’s thought at least one of the attackers was carrying a machete. The victim suffered a stab wound to his back and was taken to hospital. The attackers fled on foot and in a vehicle and were chased by police. Detective Sergeant Simon Douch, from Wirral CID, said: "The investigation is very much in its early stages and we are still trying to piece together exactly what has happened. The victim has been taken to hospital where he is being treated for his injuries and this was a nasty attack.” Houghton Road has been closed at the junctions with Glebe Hey Road and Hoole Road. Police are questioning locals and examining CCTV footage.

Two men, both aged 40 from Bebington and Upton, have been arrested on suspicion of assault and affray.
