Pictures shared by police on social media show how a lorry driver had an extremely lucky escape after a large rock was hurled from a motorway bridge by youths, smashing through the windscreen.

Pictures show how the rock was on a direct course to hit the driver, but luckily became lodged in the pane of glass.

The incident occurred on a stretch of the M62 in Huyton this afternoon

Merseyside Police Roads Policing Unit tweeted the picture with the caption: "Parents, do you know what your children are up to? Some in Huyton have been throwing rocks off motorway bridges, luckily this HGV driver suffered no injuries on this occasion.

"A car wouldn't have been so fortunate."
