Liverpool to 'play its part' for Ukraine refugees
Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram calls on government to ease visa requirements for refugees fleeing Russian invasion
Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram's told us the Liverpool City Region will play its part in taking refugees from Ukraine, but is calling on the Government to ease entry requirements for those fleeing the war.
It comes after Boris Johnson said Britain won't follow other nations in allowing a visa-free approach.
So far only around 50 have been issued but Poland's accepted more than a million people.
Steve Rotheram says Liverpool will always do its best to help :
"People of Liverpool are doing a great job of raising funding and donations but it's only part of the story isn't it? We're doing it in spite of the government. Imagine what we could do if the Government responded positively to that unfolding crisis.
"We're still part of the world and part of that is going through an horrendous ordeal. The country needs to do something, the government needs to do something, Liverpool will play its part but our country needs to open its arms just the same as Europe has already done".
