Liverpool City Council has reopened a road where an elderly couple died after their car got submerged in floodwater.

Queens Drive has been shut since the deaths of Elaine and Philip Marco in August 2023.

Work has been taking place since to improve drainage and install a flood warning system.

Sensors have been fitted to alert the council of any flooding and electronic signs will warn drivers if the road is due to shut.

CCTV has been installed and crews have also repaired the road and footpaths that were damaged.

Councillor Dan Barrington, Cabinet Member for Highways, said:

"We would like to take the opportunity to thank local residents and road users for their immense patience whilst we have carried out work at this location.

"The road was significantly damaged in the flood meaning the carriageway and footway has had to be replaced. In addition to this we have installed sensors, and temporary signage and barriers.

"Thank you again to everyone for bearing with us while we have made sure everything is operational before reopening the road."

An inquest into the deaths of Elaine and Philip Marco is due to resume later this month.
