Liverpool to reveal details of 2022 Commonwealth Games bid
A successful bid would see the construction of a 5,000-seat swimming arena.
Liverpool will today reveal details of its bid for the 2022 Commonwealth Games – which includes a world first for a major tournament.
If Liverpool’s bid is successful, a 5,000-seat swimming arena – complete with a floating 50m swimming pool - will be built in one of the docks near the Albert Dock.
The city’s bid team and its Mayor Joe Anderson hope the innovative pool will help showcase the city’s beauty to a potential TV audience of more than a billion people.
Once the games are over the stands would be removed and the pool would be opened to the public as a city centre “lido”.
And the new Everton stadium at Bramley Moore Dock looks set to become the main athletics venue.
The full details of Liverpool’s bid will be unveiled this afternoon featuring Commonwealth Games gold medallist Beth Tweddle, three-time Commonwealth medallist Steve Parry and boxing World Champion Tony Bellew as well as Liverpool 2022 bid chairman Brian Barwick.
Liverpool will battle Birmingham for the right to become the UK bidder for the 2022 games.
Bid judges will be in the city next month and a final decision on where the games will be held will be made before the end of the year.
The council, which is co-ordinating the bid, wants to hold events throughout the city with the waterfront will be at the heart of the games bid
