Overnight votes have been counted across Merseyside to determine who will be in charge of our local councils.

Results are now in for three of the five regions which went to the polls yesterday.

Liverpool isn't running elections this year due to a change in the electoral system for the city council.

Instead, a full set of local elections will take place there next year.

Here's how the results are shaping up so far acoss the rest of the region...

Halton

There has been little change to the council in Halton overnight with Labour remaining in control there.

18 out of 54 seats were up for grabs and just one of those has changed hands overnight.

The Green Party have lost their only candidate in Halton with the Conservatives picking it up.

That leaves the final tally as Labour on 48 councillors, the Conservatives on 3 and the Lib Dems on 3.

Sefton

The Labour Party have kept control of the council, Sefton, picking up an extra seat in the process.

A third (22) of the 66 seats there were up for election with just one of those changing hands overnight. Labour has gained one council seat from the Conservatives.

The final results leave Labour with 48 councillors, the Liberal Democrats second with 8 and the Conservatives with 7.

Wirral

Wirral Borough Council remains under no overall control. 23 out of 66 council seats were up for grabs there.

Whilst Labour remains the largest party, they have lost three seats, two to the Green Party and one to the Conservative Party.
