Hundreds of people turned out to pay their respects after 49 people were killed when a gunman opened fire in the gay night club Pulse at the weekend.
A minutes silence was held at 7pm last night before candles were placed on the steps by people who turned out for the service.
Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson said:
"People are still in shock about what happened, it's hard to take it I think it's good people have come together lighting candles and being with each other in a way that is spexcial and unique."
"It sends out a clear message that people here in this city feel safe and rightly so and I think thats an important message"
Crowds in other cities around the UK and the World also paid their respects to victims.
Rainbow flags on Canal Street in Manchester's Gay Village were lowered to half mast in tribute and in Glasgow's George Square the names of victims were read out as people lit candles.
A similar vigil has also been organised in Edinburgh to take place on Wednesday.
In Paris, the Eiffel Tower was lit up in rainbow colours, while American and rainbow flags were displayed outside City Hall.
