Liverpool wear black armbands following death of fan in Italy, as tributes emerge online
Philip Dooley was involved in a collision on a motorway in Bergamo early on Tuesday morning (September 17)
Liverpool wore black armbands last night in memory of a fan who died in a collision on a motorway in Italy just hours before they kicked off against AC Milan.
Representatives from both clubs also placed flowers on the seat of Philip Dooley at the San Siro stadium.
The 51-year-old was hit by a vehicle while "crossing a motorway" in Bergamo at around 01:00 on Tuesday (September 17).
In tributes posted on X, one friend said it would be "hard to imagine the game without him", while another wrote "top man and massive support to my family".
Liverpool marked their return to the Champions League with a convincing 3-1 victory over AC Milan as head coach Arne Slot produced a strong response to questions over his selection policy.
Goals from centre-backs Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk overturned Christian Pulisic's third-minute opener for the hosts and Dominik Szoboszlai's first club goal since March secured the result midway through the second half.
The unfortunate Mohamed Salah hit the crossbar twice in the opening 45 minutes but it was one of the players Slot brought in - fellow Dutchman Cody Gakpo - who caught the eye.
