A tax on sugar might be one way of helping Liverpool's problem with obesity.

The call from Richard Kemp, the leader of the Liberal Democrats at the City Council who says the true components of what we are eating is often hidden.

Listen to our interview with him here:

The politician is bringing the issue to the fore at the local authority in the coming weeks given that 40% of 11 year olds in Liverpool are deemed as overweight.

He told Radio City News; “One ice cream and two fizzy drinks perhaps doesn't seem like an over-indulgence, but for a child it means they're consuming seven times the recommended volume of sugar in a day.

“Did you know there was four spoonfuls of sugar in a tin our tomato soup?

“I wouldn’t have known that and I’m sure parents are the same.”

Mr Kemp also said you do not have to be eating junk to fall foul of the calorie allowance as many foods are deceptive.

He warned that in 40 years the life expectancy of people in Liverpool could - for the first time - drop below today's generation.
