Lincolnshire woman jailed after £3 million fraudulent NHS claim exposed

Kae Burnell-Chambers admitted misleading the courts over alleged medical negligence

A 44-year-old woman from Lincolnshire has been jailed for contempt of court after admitting she made a dishonest multi-million-pound damages claim against the NHS.

Kae Burnell-Chambers was handed a 26-week custodial sentence and ordered to pay £135,000 in legal costs following a court hearing on 16th October. She will serve at least half of her sentence behind bars.

£3 million claim based on false evidence

In November 2019, Burnell-Chambers filed a clinical negligence claim against Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust, seeking more than £3 million in damages for an alleged delay in diagnosing and treating Cauda Equina Syndrome.

However, surveillance footage and social media evidence later revealed inconsistencies in her account of her condition.

NHS Resolution, which handles legal claims against the health service, said the material clearly contradicted the limitations she had described in her claim.

Burnell-Chambers eventually accepted the claim was fundamentally dishonest and discontinued it.

Contempt proceedings were launched by NHS Resolution in September 2023.

In a written guilty plea submitted on 25th July 2025, Burnell-Chambers admitted she had intentionally misled legal teams and medical experts in a bid to inflate the amount of compensation she might receive.

Judge: “She lied about her symptoms”

The Honourable Mrs Justice Tipple said: “All aspects of the clinical negligence claim were based on a dishonestly exaggerated claim.

“The truth was that she had made a good recovery. She lied about her symptoms to make a substantial claim. The Trust found you out… taking all into account and mitigation evidence, it is appropriate to impose an immediate custodial sentence.”

Helen Vernon, Chief Executive of NHS Resolution, said: “Fraudulent claims for compensation against the NHS take money away from patient care.

“We remain committed to ensuring fair compensation for patients who have suffered harm. However, this case serves as a clear reminder of the serious potential consequences faced by those who pursue dishonest or exaggerated claims against the NHS.”
