Two people have been taken to hospital after getting into difficulty in the sea at Leasowe on the Wirral.

Officers from the Wirral Coast Guard team received reports at 8am of an incident taking place in the water close to Leasowe Lighthouse.

In total, three people had gotten into difficulty in the incident which took place on Saturday morning (August 17th).

When emergency responders arrived on the scene, they found a police officer and a member of the public who had started swimming out to one of the casualties, who had begun to "drift quickly" as the tide continued to move.

Both people were retrieved by officers and the member of the public, as they brought the two to shore.

The remaining two were brought back to the mainland after having a rescue line thrown to the police officer who went back into the sea to save the other two victims.

All three victims were treated on the beach, with two casualties being taken to hospital for further treatment.

Cost Guard officials stepped in to provide emergency medical treatment until paramedics arrived at the scene to bring the victims to hospital.

Speaking on the incident, Geoff Simmons, Deputy Station Officer at Wirral Coastguard Rescue Team praised his team for the quick response.

"This was a time critical rescue bravely carried out by the two rescuers," Simmons said.

"The incident could have been avoided by preparing before heading to the beach and checking the tide times and leaving the sandbanks with plenty of time to spare."

The Coast Guard has since urged future swimmers to know the times the tide comes in and out to avoid any other incidents.
