A woman has died on the Isle of Man after being involved in an altercation outside a hotel on the island's capital, Douglas.

The 57-year-old woman was said to be visiting the island from Merseyside when she was assaulted outside the Palace Hotel in the capital at around 9:20p.m. on Friday night (March 29th).

Emergency services were called to the scene and took the woman to the Nobles hospital on the outskirts of the city, but was later pronounced dead.

A 53-year-old man, also believed to be from Merseyside, has been arrested by officers in connection with the woman's death.

Police investigating the death have said that the man and the woman are said to know each other.

Detective Superintendent Stephen Maddocks, who is leading the investigation said that they are keen to speak to anyone who may have seen the altercation take place.

"We are conducting enquiries into this matter and we currently have a section of the pavement between the Lido Slip and Palace View Terrace cordoned off," he explained in a statement posted to the Isle of Man Police Facebook page.

"I am appealing for witnesses who may have seen a group of people walking between Jaks Bar on Loch Promenade and the Palace Hotel on Central Promenade, Douglas around 9pm last night.

"There was a man and woman in their 50’s, together with another man and woman in their 20’s, who had with them a small child. We know the group walked from the Jaks area towards the Palace Hotel, passing through the Villa Marina Arcade and past the Castlemona shops."

Mr Maddocks added that the group had walked past the Majestic Chinese Restaurant as the altercation took place, with customers watching on.

"We are speaking to a number of witnesses but I believe other members of the public may have seen this group and may have vital information to assist us with our enquiries."

As well as this, Mr Maddocks appealed to any drivers who had been driving along the promenade at about 9pm on Friday in order to help officers piece together the events that led to the woman's death.

Police have informed the woman's next of kin of her passing and are supporting the family as investigations continue.
