Hundreds of people have signed a petition to save the Penny Farthing Pub in Liverpool after the Royal Court Theatre have applied for money from the council to buy it.
The pub adjoins the theatre, which has plans to transform it into a youth theatre.
Liverpool City Council have today agreed to loan £1.2 million for the Royal Court to buy the pub which is currently owned by St John's market.
Julie Campbell started the petition and told us;
''We need to keep this pub open because it's my local. I come here everyday and it's a really friendly pub.''
''People were shocked when they found out it could be closing''
The plans are part of the Royal Court's ongoing multi-million pound regeneration.
The cabinet papers for today's meeting describe how the plan would 'remove an eyesore from a key gateway in the city centre'.
