A solicitor who represented many of the Hillsborough families has received the Freedom of Liverpool.

Elkan Abrahamson played a key role in successfully arguing that the victims of the disaster in 1989 were unlawfully killed.

He's also being involved in plenty of other cases too - including the Toxteth uprisings and working with the families impacted by the Birmingham pub bombings and Manchester Arena bombing.

Elkan is also heading up the Covid Inquiry team, representing the Covid-19 Bereaved Families for Justice group.

Elkan said:

"It's great that it's Liverpool - I'm really pleased and proud to be awarded it.

"I'm a Scouser and I'm part of the extended Liverpool family so it's like your family saying 'well done', that's what you value the most.

"It's rewarding as a job to try to give some power to the dis-empowered, which is really what all of my work has been about.

"There are still frustrations and still things we're trying to achieve and the award won't help with that unfortunately, despite the fact that it's a great thing to have, so still work to be done."

The award comes just ahead of the 35th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster, which is on Monday.
