Friends of a Widnes teenager who drowned after slipping into a pond are calling for urgent action to prevent more young lives being lost in the water.
14 year old Teya Davies died in 2018 after getting into difficulty trying to help one of her friends who had fallen into the water at a local beauty spot.
Figures released for 'Be Water Aware' week show just under half of people who drowned in 2020 had no intention of getting into the water.
Liv Eren runs the Teya's Legacy campaign group, she wants life saving equipment installed around all open bodies of water :
"I always find it difficult where young people have died because I always feel that these deaths are preventable. Teya died but people are still dying and there is not enough awareness.
"Often we see rescue equipment put up in response to a tragedy but even the strongest of swimmers can't cope in the water, and whether they had the intention of getting into the water or not, it highlights just how important rescue equipment is in saving lives".
