Former Royal Marine and amputee takes on World Record Attempt

Seven years after suffering life changing injuries in Afghanistan, a former Royal Marine from Bootle is defying all the odds to break a World Record tonight.

Since then he's become an accomplished athlete, competing in Prince Harry's Invictus Games where he won two gold medals, and running 10K in 40 minutes.

Tonight at Wavertree Athletics Club he'll attempt to become the fastest single leg amputee in the world to run that same distance.

Andy said:

"The idea is to create a huge atmosphere, friends family and supporters all around the track jeering me on, and hopefully with all those factors it will help me get those 50 seconds I need to roar me to victory"

Despite the World record attempt being a personal challenge, Andy hopes it can inspire other people to tackle what ever challenges they're facing in their own lives.

"We all face problems and we shouldn't let them define us. For me my challenge was getting blown up and I wouldn't be walking the walk if I didn't follow that. I don't want to be defined as the guy who got blown up and lost his leg. "

"Although it is about running, it's about showing people that you may not all get blown up in Afghanistan but we all face problems in life, and if I can overcome this I hope it can give inspiration to people that they can overcome their challenges too"

Anyone wanting to support Andy can head over to Wavertree Athletics Track at 19.30pm on Thursday 14th July.
