Police are appealing for help in tracing five shotguns and ammunition that was stolen from a Wirral house in broad daylight.
A member of the public reported seeing two youths running from a house in Mount Road carrying several long cloth bags at around 2.30pm.
Patrols were sent to the area and signs of forced entry at the back of the house were discovered. Once inside officers found that the burglars had gained access to a gun cabinet and stolen a number of shotguns belonging to the homeowner along with ammunition for the firearms.
The owner was out at the time but has been contacted and officers are in the process of speaking to him as well as any possible witnesses in the street.
The youths are described as white, aged around 14 years-old. The first was wearing a grey hoody and tracksuit bottoms, and the second wore a black top and a cap over his hood. Both were wearing scarves over their faces. It is believed that they ran off on foot up Mount Road in the direction of Manor Road.
Detective Inspector Paul Parry from Wirral CID said: “I would like to reassure the local community that we are doing everything we can to investigate this burglary and recover these stolen firearms. The weapons were legally-owned shotguns which belong to an enthusiast who had correctly registered them with the police. However in the wrong hands they are clearly dangerous and getting them back is our top priority.
"The people who have stolen them may not fully appreciate the danger they may be putting themselves and others in by handling these weapons so I would appeal for them to come forward so we can take back possession of them safely. I would also urge anyone who knows the people who have got them to think carefully about the risks and implications of handling a firearm. We do not want anyone to come to any harm due to these weapons being misused or falling into the wrong hands so please, do the right thing and call the police.”
DI Parry added: “This burglary happened in broad daylight in a busy residential area when there will have been lots of people going about their daily business. The two suspects ran off on foot carrying large, distinctive cloth bags which I am sure would attract attention."
