Five men were arrested following unattractive scenes between rival Liverpool and Manchester United fans at last night’s Europa League last-16 second leg at Old Trafford.

Of the Liverpool fans four were arrested in total, two ion suspicion of affray following physical confrontation after the match, while another was arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage after the window of a minibus was smashed.

All three fans remain in custody. The fourth was arrested for letting off a flare and was given a caution. One Manchester United fan was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly and remains in custody.

The scuffles took place in the top tier of the East Stand where a few Liverpool fans, which were sat amongst home supporters, draped a club flag over the balcony, which sparked delight from the visiting fans below them.

Before the match an offensive banner with the words “Murderers” was on display on a bridge over the M602 in Salford which Liverpool fans would have seen on their route to Old Trafford. It also contained the date of the Hillsborough disaster, in which 96 Liverpool fans died at the FA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest.

Superintendent Jim Ligget who was the match commander for last night’s clash said: “Towards the end of the fame there were a handful of concerning incidents which are currently being investigated.

“We have made a total of five arrests, however the behaviour of the majority of fans in attendance was excellent and I would like to thank them for their co-operation throughout.”
