The clothing of the gunman who shot a woman outside a pub on Christmas Eve is similar to that worn by the man accused of her murder, an expert has told a court.

Connor Chapman, 23, is accused of killing Elle Edwards and injuring five others when he allegedly opened fire with a Skorpion sub-machine outside the Lighthouse pub in Wallasey Village, Wirral, Merseyside just before midnight on December 24 last year.

His trial, at Liverpool Crown Court, has heard the shooting was the culmination of a feud between groups of people on the Woodchurch and Beechwood estates, on either side of the M53 in Wirral.

On Friday, image analyst Tessa Macklam told the court she had compared footage showing the gunman outside the pub with clips of Chapman, including CCTV of him putting petrol into a stolen Mercedes, used in the shooting, at a garage on December 23 and bodyworn footage of him being served with injunctions earlier in the year.

The jury heard there were similarities between the footwear worn by the shooter and worn by Chapman on occasions, and it was suggested both were wearing Nike Air Max trainers.

Ms Macklam said there were similarities between tracksuit bottoms worn by the gunman and by Chapman.

Mark Rhind KC, defending, suggested the similarities between the garments may be "entirely unexceptional" in the "world of tracksuit bottoms".

Ms Macklam replied: "It is not for me to say that."

She also pointed out similarities between a Berghaus jacket worn by Chapman when he went shopping in Manchester's Arndale Centre earlier on Christmas Eve and the upper clothing worn by the man carrying out the shooting.

Chapman denies the murder of Ms Edwards, two counts of attempted murder and three counts of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

He also denies possession of a Skorpion sub-machine gun with intent to endanger life and possession of ammunition with intent to endanger life.

Co-defendant Thomas Waring, 20, of Private Drive, Barnston, Wirral, denies possessing a prohibited weapon and assisting an offender by helping Chapman to dispose of the car.

The trial will continue on Monday.
