Drunk driver jailed after driving at a wall police after Ladies Day
Gerard Duffy injured one police officer back in April
A man who drove into police officers in Aintree, while drunk behind the wheel, has been jailed.
At around 8.30pm on Friday, 5 April, a traffic officer was stopped by a member of the public who pointed out a BMW car on Park Lane, being driven by a man who they suspected had been drink driving. The vehicle stopped and when the traffic officer approached the car the driver refused to get out and drove through a red light, crashing into another car.
Some nearby officers assisted in attempting to stop the vehicle, but Gerard Duffy then tried to use his car as a battering ram to force his way through the officers standing around him.
Police were forced to smash in the windows on Duffy's car, before using pepper spray and a taser to stop him driving off.
The 56 year old from Walton was charged with dangerous driving, failing to provide a specimen for analysis and obstruct/resist a constable in execution of duty.
He's now been sentenced to ten months in prison and also disqualified from driving for five years and three months, after pleading guilty at Liverpool Crown Court.
Detective Inspector Lee Wilkinson said: “This incident occurred in a busy area at a time when many people were leaving Aintree races following Ladies Day and the actions of Duffy were incredibly reckless and inconsiderate. Thankfully, no one was seriously injured however the consequences could’ve been tragic and I hope Duffy now takes time to reflect on his actions and the damage he could’ve caused.
“This kind of behaviour will not be tolerated by Merseyside Police and we will continue to do all that we can to bring those responsible for such offences to justice and keep our roads and communities safe.”
