Hundreds of classes have been cancelled today as teachers on Merseyside join others across the country in a 24 hour strike.
Members of the National Union of Teachers have walked out to demonstrate their concerns about the government's plans to reduce funding for education, and its consequences for children's learning and for teachers' terms and conditions.
The union said its demands were to increase funding to schools and education, guarantee terms and conditions in all types of schools, and to resume negotiations on teacher contracts to allow workload to be addressed.
Cathy Fitzgerald - Taher - Regional Secretary of Liverpool NUT said "It's about the future of the education syste in this country and if something isn't done soon, it will have a negative affect on children"
"Being a parent myself I totally understand parents will have to look for other childcare arrangement, but it's short term pain for long term gain. It's not about our pay it's about their children's education."
As well as dozens of school closures across Merseyside, there will also be a march in support of teachers through Liverpool city centre .
The organsation has written to Education Secretary Nicky Morgan calling for "meaningful'' discussions to tackle issues it said were negatively affecting education.
In a letter written to the NUT Secretary, the Secretary of State for Education, Nicky Morgan said: "Removing unnecessary workload for teachers is a priority for this government, and we have made this clear in our discussions. Our extensive work with you along with the wider profession, is helping to ensure that teachers can concentrate on what they do best.
As well as dozens of school closures across Merseyside, there will also be a march in support of teachers through Liverpool city centre .
It will begin with a rally in Derby Square at 10.30am and finish at The Liner Hotel in Lord Nelson Street.
