Drivers are being warned to avoid Lower Lane in Fazakerley this morning after a collision near Aintree Hospital.
Police have closed the road and are diverting traffic along alternative routes in and out of Liverpool instead.
A minor road traffic collision involving a van has damaged a gas pipe on Lower Lane close to the junction with Ternhall Road.
No-one has been injured.
The closures and diversions will remain in place until the extent of the damage to the gas pipe has been assessed.
Motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible during rush hour, leave extra travel time and follow police and council diversions.
