Today leaders from across Liverpool are holding crisis talks as domestic abuse cases here continue to soar.

Wavertree MP Paula Barker has called an emergency meeting after being told support services are at breaking point.

"Since the start of Covid we've had nine domestic abuse deaths across Merseyside, three in one weekend. It's unprecedented."

Figures have reached unprecedented levels with one support service having to stop taking new referrals with victims facing a 14 month wait for help with just four case workers supporting 369 women.

Barker says without more funding and better access more women will suffer in silence :

"One of the ladies that they've been dealing with is in her nineties, she's been in an abusive relationship for more than sixty years.

"There's just heartbreaking stories out there each and every day. These women are being failed and they are being failed at every level of society and quite frankly it's just not good enough."
