COP26 event takes place in Runcorn
It's one of a number of regional events for people who can't make it to the conference in Glasgow
Runcorn will today play host to an official COP26 climate conference event.
Political leaders, industry bosses and registered guests will gather to discuss how the North West can meet its climate change targets.
Whilst the UK Government wants the country to reach Net-Zero carbon emissions by 2050, leaders in the North West think the region can do so ten years ahead of schedule in 2040.
The event, titled 'Powering the Green Industrial Revolution will take place at The Heath, Runcorn today from 9.15am – 4pm.
Organisers say the events will showcase some of the 'innovative' projects planned for the North West such as those to harness tidal power via the Mersey Tidal Power project and decarbonise industries by creating and distributing hydrogen via the HyNet North West project.
Steve Rotheram, Metro Mayor of the Liverpool City Region, said:
“COP26 is an internationally important event, a rare chance where the eyes of the world will be on the UK. We have a responsibility to lead international efforts to cut our carbon emissions, rapidly decarbonise and, ultimately, to save our planet. I believe that the North West will be the (clean) engine that drives that national effort and that my region should be at the heart of that."
Clare Hayward MBE, Chair of the Cheshire & Warrington LEP, said:
“We have a bold ambition to make Cheshire and Warrington the most sustainable place in the UK and achieve Net-Zero.
"The recent announcement that HyNet North West low carbon and energy project will be one of the first two to be delivered in the UK is a huge step towards achieving this."
A follow-up event will take place in Manchester next Tuesday focusing on new sources of sustainable fuel and electricity.
