Morning commuters have faced chaos on Merseyrail services as cold weather caused a number of problems.

Broken down trains led to cancellations on both the Ormskirk and Southport lines, with replacement buses running between Ormskirk and Moorfields and Southport and Sandhills.

A signalling fault also cause the rail operator to suspend services on the Ellesmere Port line, between Ellesmere Port and Hooton.

Poor weather also caused disruption on the Headbolt Lane via Kirkby line, with Merseyrail warning services may be altered or cancelled.

Passengers are being urged to check before travelling.
