Some staff at the City of Liverpool College go on strike over pay rise
Union members are demanding at least a 5% rise
Staff at the City of Liverpool College are walking out as part of a UCU strike over disputes on their most recent pay rise.
Today is the first of 10 strike days, as University and College Union union members take planned action over a proposed 1% pay rise by the Association of Colleges
The Union are calling for that offer to be over 5%, stating that this would be more reflective of the work they have done throughout the pandemic.
Martyn Moss from the UCU said: "They went above and beyond to convert to online teaching virtually overnight, support their students and do some amazing work, working additional hours. Its particularly disappointing that many members are not going to receive a pay rise at all.
"We've offered the employer at the college the opportunity to sit down with us and to try and resolve the dispute amicably, but they've shut down negotiations and are refusing to talk any further. That's why our members will be standing on picket lines socially distanced for further days next week."
The strike is part of a nationwide day of action over fair pay in colleges across the UK, with nine other colleges across the country are participating in the walk out.
A video tweeted by UCU City of Liverpool College shows union members who are all demanding fair pay for all college workers.
The Liverpool college will be open for staff and students again tomorrow.
However, the City of Liverpool College is not alone in its strike action, as from Monday strikes will continue at the University of Liverpool, as part of a long running dispute over redundancies at the university's Faculty of Health and Life Sciences.
There have already been 24 days of strike action during this dispute over the past six months, with some success as what would have been 47 redundancies has been reduced to two.
