Cash-in-transit robbery outside Smithdown Asda

Detectives have released CCTV images of a man they would like to speak to following a cash-in-transit robbery at an Asda supermarket in Liverpool.

A cash delivery guard was collecting cash from the store on Smithdown Road in Wavertree at 12.10pm on Friday 29 January when he was approached by a loan male.

The guard had an unknown liquid sprayed in his face before the cash box was grabbed from his hand.

The offender then got into a dark blue 5 series BMW car which was waiting for him and drove off by turning right out of Asda onto Smithdown Road then left on Thornycroft Road next to Aldi in the general direction of Wavertree High Street.

The empty cash box was later found in Allerton cemetery. The BMW, which had been stolen during a burglary in Liverpool in January, was also recovered in Deepfield Road, Wavertree on Sunday 28 February.

Officers have released CCTV images of a man they believe he could help them with their enquiries.

Detective Inspector Ian Hussey said: “This incident happened in the middle of the day when the supermarket and the car park would have been busy with people going about their business.

“Luckily the security guard was not seriously injured but I want to reassure the public we will do everything possible to identify the person responsible and bring them to justice.

“We would appeal to anyone who knows the identity of the person pictured, or even the person themselves, to contact us.”
