Passengers at John Lennon Airport have been forced to abandon their holidays - after snow grounded flights there this morning.

It shut down earlier and some people were stuck on planes for over an hour on the runway before the flights were cancelled.

On Twitter, the airport said this morning: "There may be some delays as a knock on effect due to the earlier weather conditions, please check with your airline directly for the latest flight news."

Alan and Jenny from North Wales had to abandon their flight to Alicante - which has been rearranged for next week. They said: "We were sat on the plane for an hour."

"At 8.30am they said the flight's been cancelled, and we all left the plane"

"We're fed up"

Haley from Runcorn was one the same flight. She said: "We've just been stuck in a queue for someone to say they can't help us."

"I feel tired, I just want to go home because nothing's happening. We need to get a refund"

Further snow showers are expected this evening

The advice is to check before you travel
