There are calls for empty and boarded up houses across Merseyside to be transformed into accomodation for the homeless.

A petition has been set up demanding that the City Council turned disused buildings into shelters.

So far over 5 thousand people have signed it.

The petition reads: "There are so many buildings not used over winter for the growining number of homeless peoplein Liverpool"

"The winter months bring so many fatalaties which could be avoided if people were allowed to sleep inside"

A Liverpool City Council spokesman said: “We invest £12.4m a year in tackling homelessness and are one of the best performing authorities when it comes to keeping people off the streets.

“We commission the Whitechapel Centre to offer support for rough sleepers in Liverpool, and outreach workers are on the streets every night identifying vulnerable people, getting them into services and helping turn their lives around. The city council is kept well informed about the homeless situation on our streets and people who are sleeping rough and need support can visit the Whitechapel Centre on Langsdale Street, and anyone who sees someone sleeping rough should contact the No Second Night Out hotline on 0300 123 2041. We already offer access to temporary accommodation with around 800 bed spaces available and support is available to try and prevent homelessness from occurring .”
