Political leaders across the North West want a change in the law to become the lasting legacy of those who lost their lives at Hillsborough.

Yesterday a judge acquitted two former Police officers and a solicitor accused of perverting the course of justice, saying they had no case to answer.

Families of the 96 have called the ruling 'a mockery' and 'a shambles'.

Andy Burnham who helped lead the fight for justice wants a Hillsborough law so bereaved relatives in the future get the same support at inquests as the state:

"That is the very minimum we should be demanding that it's a level playing field when people walk into those courtrooms.

"What chance do they have if they haven't got that legal representation but it's happening to families now.

"We need justice in this country and we will still fight for justice for the 96 by changing the law of this country by making it much fairer than it currently is.

"You go back to the original inquest and the authorities throwing money like confetti at the best QC's in the land and Margaret having to use the money she got from the criminal injuries compensation authority to try and pay for her legal fees and even that wasn't enough."

"How can that be fair".
