Police step up patrols in the St Michaels area of Aigburth after attempted robbery on woman in woods.
The young woman was cutting through the woods between Moel Famau View and Aigburth cricket club when a man tried to grab her backpack.
She struggled with the offender, who grabbed her by her hood and managed to scratch him in the face then run away.
Nothing was stolen however she was extremely shaken.
The victim called 999 and patrols searched the area for the man, finding no trace of him.
He has been described as a white man of large build in his late 40s or early 50s, around 6ft 2ins tall.
He was bald or had very thin grey hair, a scar on his left eye, pale complexion and was wearing a white t-shirt, blue jeans and trainers.
Officers are treating this as an isolated incident but are increasing patrols in the area.
Aigburth neighbourhood inspector, Graeme Rooney, said: “This was a highly unusual incident and thankfully robberies and attempted robberies are extremely rare in this area. The woods between Riverside Drive and St Michaels train station however are quite isolated and I would encourage people just to be vigilant and be aware of their surroundings when they walk or jog through them, regardless of the time of day.
"The young woman did exactly the right thing in getting away from the offender as quickly as possible and reporting the incident to us.
"People can expect to see increased patrols by my neighbourhood officers in this area and other wooded areas and parkland in south Liverpool throughout the summer and I would encourage people to report anything concerning them to the police.”
