Arrest after suspected doorstep fraud in Crosby
Bank staff called police after an elderly man tried to withdraw a large sum of cash
Merseyside Police has arrested a man in Crosby after staff at a bank suspected a doorstep fraud targeting an elderly resident.
Officers were called to a NatWest branch on Friday 21 November after concerns were raised. An elderly man had arrived at the bank accompanied by a suspected bogus trader who they thought was attempting to persuade him to withdraw a large sum of money for alleged tree-cutting work.
A 29-year-old man from Chester was arrested on suspicion of fraud by false representation shortly after officers were called. He remains in custody for questioning.
Detective Chief Inspector Mike Dalton said: “Thankfully officers quickly responded and arrested a man before the elderly victim lost a large sum of money. Bogus traders have no regard for who they target and I’m sure the community will share our disgust at the actions of these individuals.”
He urged residents to remain vigilant when approached at home by individuals offering work or services: “Take time to verify who they are, never feel pressured into making quick decisions, and don’t hesitate to say ‘no’. Elderly people, their relatives and friends should always be wary of callers to their address offering any kind of service, however official they may appear.”
Dalton emphasized the lasting harm caused by such offenders: “These types of offenders prey on the most vulnerable members of society and often leave a profound and lasting impact. They may claim that work needs doing on a property which is not even required, and charge an extortionate amount for work that often does not even get carried out.”
Police are urging the public to report any suspicious doorstep activity and to check on elderly neighbours or relatives who may be at risk of exploitation.
